How to Extract Text from an Image

Image-to-text (OCR) works best on sharp, high-contrast type. The ToolSphere Image to Text tool runs Tesseract in your browser so screenshots and labels are not uploaded for recognition.

What OCR can and cannot do

Optical character recognition reads pixels and guesses characters. Printed English on a clean background usually works. Handwriting, tiny type, decorative fonts, and heavy JPEG artifacts often fail.

The ToolSphere extractor is English-first and private: recognition runs in the tab, not on our servers.

Tips that improve accuracy

Do the cheap fixes before you blame the engine:

  • Crop to the text region first.
  • Use a straight, well-lit screenshot—not an angled phone photo.
  • Prefer PNG or a high-quality JPEG over a tiny compressed file.
  • Proof numbers, names, and punctuation after copy.

When to use PDF OCR instead

Multi-page scans belong in a PDF OCR or desktop workflow. A single screenshot or label is what image-to-text is for. If you already have a text-based PDF and need Word, use PDF to Word rather than photographing the screen.
