How WPM Is Calculated on a Typing Test
Most online typing tests treat five characters as one word. Net WPM counts only correct characters. That is the method The ToolSphere typing speed test uses so you can compare practice scores fairly.
The five-character word
A “word” on a typing test is usually five characters, including spaces. That standard lets tests compare passages of different lengths.
Gross WPM uses all typed characters. Net WPM subtracts errors so rushing is penalized.
What a good score means
Casual typists often land near 40 WPM. Many office roles look for 50–70+ with high accuracy. Treat an online score as practice, not a certificate.
