Jitter is the variation in latency between measurements. Even a good average ping can feel laggy if the response time jumps around unpredictably.

A ping test gives you a single measurement. Jitter is the variation when you run that test repeatedly. If your ping bounces between 10ms and 50ms, you have high jitter. If it stays around 15ms every time, jitter is low.

For gaming and video calls, consistency matters as much as speed.

Why high jitter feels worse than high ping

Your brain expects consistent feedback. When latency jumps around, the experience feels laggy and unpredictable even if the average is acceptable.

  • Stable 50ms latency can feel smoother than erratic 30ms with high jitter.
  • Variable packet delivery causes buffer underruns in streaming and stuttering in video calls.
  • Game servers have harder time predicting player positions if latency varies wildly.

Common causes of high jitter

Jitter often comes from shared resources, congestion, or wireless interference.

  • Wi‑Fi: radio interference or weak signal causes variable delay.
  • Network congestion: busy times can cause unpredictable packet queuing.
  • Router issues: old hardware or poor placement can add variance.
  • Background traffic: streaming, backups, or other users fighting for bandwidth.

How to test and reduce jitter

Run a ping test multiple times and look at the range, not just the average. If results vary widely, that is high jitter.

  • Switch to Ethernet if possible—wired is almost always more stable.
  • Reduce background traffic during critical tasks.
  • Try a different Wi‑Fi channel or get closer to the router.
