What Is Packet Loss & Why It Matters
Packet loss is when data sent across the internet fails to reach its destination. Even small percentages can cause noticeable problems for gaming, calls, and streaming.
What packet loss means
The internet works by breaking messages into small units called packets. Packet loss occurs when one or more of those units does not make it to the destination. The sending device may try to resend, or the app may just work around the gap.
A small percentage of loss is often acceptable. Above 1–2%, most people notice problems.
Why it matters for different tasks
The impact depends on what you are doing.
- Gaming: lost packets mean delayed positions and missed actions; 1% loss can feel unplayable.
- Video calls: audio or video frames drop out; callers sound robotic or freeze.
- Streaming: buffering, quality drops, or rebuffering loops.
- Downloads: usually handled by retries; you might not notice small losses.
Common causes
Packet loss can happen at any point from your device to the destination.
- Wi‑Fi interference or weak signal.
- Congested local network or ISP backbone.
- Faulty cables or overheating network equipment.
- Destination server overload or network issues far from you.
How to diagnose and fix it
Use a ping test to your target service and run it multiple times. If responses are missing, that is a sign of loss. For Wi‑Fi users, switching to Ethernet is often the fastest fix.
- Test on both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet to narrow down the problem.
- Restart your modem and router.
- Check for physical interference or interference sources near the router.
- Contact your ISP if loss persists on Ethernet.
